Invented by Salvatore Ferragamo in 1936, as a response to the rationing of leather during WWII, the first wedge heels were made out of heavy wooden soles and then cork (a much lighter substitute). Resourceful women at the time, used to paint them in contrasting layers of stripes or decorate the sides with studs or small shells.

Since then the wedge has had a recurring role in fashion, reappearing in the disco-era 70’s, the retro-inspired 90’s and yet again this season. The most alluring interpretations came from Marni, whose sleek wedge heels add height and the illusion of a longer slimmer leg.
